Spring and Summer Programs 2007

Summer Reading at the Library

Get A Clue @ Your Library Information Update

The help and support of more than 20 volunteers allowed us to host 28 children's programs with a total of 680 people attending. Additionally, we co-sponsored a summer reading wrap up, held at the village green in Jericho Center where 65 attended. We obtained a mini grant from the State Department of Libraries in the amount of $100.00 which was used to supplement our programming budget. The Friends of the DRML generously funded the program, Back Yard Nature Detective. Question of the week, a popular attraction, was coordinated by Constance Murphy. We had a request to revive the Reading Buddies program. For this ongoing program middle and high school students have been paired with elementary age students. The eleven pairs of Reading Buddies are continuing to meet and read together for half hour blocks of time.

In addition to the above events youth were encouraged to join one of our three reading clubs. 243 students, preschool through age 18, signed up to become a member in one the three groups offered. As in the past we held a drawing for each of the reading clubs. A bag of books was given to one child in the Read to Me Club, a $50.00 savings bond, donated by the Merchant's Bank, was given to one child in the Reading Club, and the drawing of a $25.00 gift certificate, donated by the University Mall, will be held on Aug. 27 and awarded to a member of the Teens Read Club.

Friends Group    Return to Top

What is a Friends Group?
A Friends Group can be self-defined. Most libraries have community members interested in lending their support, time and skills to make the library a better place. Friends of Libraries work with the staff and trustees to help the library achieve its short and long term goals. Friends can take on special projects, sponsor programs, keep the staff informed about the needs of the community and participate in fund-raising events. Friends can help regularly, volunteer once a year or offer financial support.

Why does the DRML need a Friends group?
The DRML has been a huge success. Each year the library serves more patrons and sponsors more programs. The library has become a place to meet, read and enjoy time together. The library is fortunate to have a solid foundation of community support. It's time to build on this foundation. In order to continue to achieve excellence, we are asking for more patrons to get involved.

If you are interested in being a Friend of the DRML call the library at 899-4962.
